BRIEF BIO

Hugo Ortega Lopez has a degree in Industrial Design from the Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana in Mexico. Afterwards he pursued his graduate studies through the Fulbright-Garcia Robles scholarship program, and its one of the few academics around the world to obtain two Fulbright grants. With the first scholarship, he studied a master in fine arts with a mayor in fiber arts and textiles at the Savannah College of Art and Design where he was granted the Outstanding Graduate Student award. A few years later the second scholarship took him to Columbia University in New York where his doctoral studies, research, and studio practice—supported by his trajectory as a professor, in various design and art programs (Universidad Metropolitana, Universidad Iberoamericana, Universidad Anahuac and Columbia University)—focused on the dynamics and methods of the artist´s creative process, and how it affects their way of teaching.

Since 1985 he has participated with fiber art, paintings, drawings, digital art and videos in more than fifty group exhibitions in Mexico, Japan, Germany, India and the United States; and eight solo exhibitions in Mexico City and New York City. He also has a wide experience as a curator and gallerist in Mexico and the United States. His professional activities in the various stages of art are characterized by a creative strategy where planning and conceptual narrative are substituted by simple rules of engagement, iterative cycles of experimentation and an a-posteriori interpretation of his work, a narrative shaped in most part by converstions with the viewer.
